Hallmark artists are inviting you into the pages of their sketchbooks to share some of their creations with you in “Outside The Lines: A Sketchbook from Hallmark”. Hallmark designer, Tuesday S., has compiled several fun exercises to help inspire a sense of renewal and growth as you create. Read on as Tuesday shares more about the process and some of her favorites! Be sure to pick out your own personal favorite online here!
Here at Hallmark, the halls are chock-full of beautiful, inspirational art. The artists behind all of these beauties keep close to them a personal place for their ideas and creative explorations: their sketchbooks. Everyone’s sketchbook is different. Some are messy. Some are perfectly organized. Some are filled with penciled doodles, while others are brilliantly colored with paint and cut papers. No matter how distinct they are from one another, the commonality they share is that these are the places where the artists can relax and be themselves, with the pressure off, and just let their ideas spill onto the pages.
As we flipped through these amazing sketchbooks, we thought, “WHAT?!?! WAIT!!! Why aren’t we sharing all of this magic with you guys?” We have been robbing our fellow Hallmarkers of all this brilliant creativity by keeping it all to ourselves! Well, not anymore! Can I get a drumroll please? We introduce to you, Outside The Lines: A Sketchbook from Hallmark! Now our super great Hallmark artists are opening up their sketchbooks and inviting everyone to see some of their lovely creations…but with a twist. Because we get so much renewal from the process of creating in our own sketchbooks, we also wanted to share that experience with you. So, when we set out to create this special sketchbook, we really wanted to tap into some fun exercises that would inspire you, while encouraging you to push the boundaries of your own creativity.
Some of the exercises are pretty easy…like this one that’s simply about mark making. What we love about playing around with mark making is you can stumble upon some really great imagery that you might not typically see because of the looseness and freedom that comes from purely experimenting. What we also love about it is you can’t mess up. That’s right, you cannot mess this up (we promise)! So no pressure (which is the motto of sketchbooks, by the way)!
Another fun exercise is the Doodle Your Own Terrarium page! Who doesn’t love an itty-bitty little terrarium?! The fun thing about doodled terrariums is they don’t have to be filled with typical terrarium stuff, like soil and plants and rocks. They can be filled with rainbows or unicorns or yetis (that’s right, yetis!).
Intimidated by beautiful still-life paintings of nature? You’re not alone! Which is why a lot of artists start by doodling and sketching first. So, for this exercise, you simply grab your sun hat, pencil, and sketchbook, and then head outdoors to relax and be one with nature.
Rainy days can be just as inspiring. Who knew? Ever think about sketching all the odds and ends you have in your kitchen cabinets? Those cupboards are stocked full of fun things just perfect for doodling. And while you’re in the kitchen, grab yourself a cup of tea to encourage that relaxing spirit.
See, sounds like fun, right? Here are a few more pages to get those creative gears a’turnin’. Plus, since we pulled these images straight from our very own sketchbooks, you get to look at pretty art and be inspired from cover to cover. Now, channel your inner Picasso and grab one of these for yourself. Happy doodling!
