DIY: PILLOW DECORATING

More than likely, you’ve seen Hallmark designer Lindsay H.’s ideas several times on TMS. You might have even gone on a digital tour of her daughter’s nursery. Lucky for us, Lindsay is sharing all the details on creating your own decorative pillows. Read on to get inspired and create your own.

One of the easiest ways to change up your home decor is with throw pillows. But fancy throw pillows at a store can be expensive, and if you purchase more than one—the cost adds up fast. A great creative solution to this is to make your own! I gathered together a few crafty Hallmarkers for a workshop to see what pillow designs they could create.

For this workshop, we started with some inexpensive white canvas pillow covers. (You can get these for super cheap at IKEA.) We used fabric paint and fabric paint pens to create our own design on each pillow cover. Bold, graphic patterns worked the best. You can also start with a design in color and layer a design in black on top.

For best results: Don’t forget to insert a piece of cardboard the size of the pillow cover before you start painting, so the paint doesn’t bleed through to the back.

You can also make your own stamps if you’re not comfortable with freehanding it. Just carve your design into a rubber-printing block, add paint and stamp away! You can go back and fill in empty spots with a brush, or leave it to have a more worn in look.

For a finishing touch, some of us added simple yarn tassels or pom-poms to the corners of the pillow. I love the pop of color with the black graphic pattern.

These pillows were super-easy and so much fun to make. Plus, they create an instant update to any chair or sofa.
