Get excited! Today we’re sharing the results of a fantastic collaboration with The Painted Arrow for Hallmark Signature’s 2016 Mother’s Day offering. Hillary Henslee, the creative artist behind The Painted Arrow, graciously answered a few questions about herself and her beautifully painted Mother’s Day collection. Thanks so much for sharing, Hillary!
How would you describe your collection in 5 words?
Beautiful, fresh, happy, simple, (and a little bit of) whimsy
What was your inspiration for it?
Honestly, my mom! I just wanted to create something that she would love!
When, where, and how did you learn to paint?
About three years ago, I saw a painting on Anthropologie and thought, “I could do that.” Well, I couldn’t. It took three or four months of constantly painting before I could show anything to anyone. Once I got comfortable with it, I just took off. About a year ago I hit a slump with the work and felt the need to expand as an artist. I took one-on-one classes for about six months with one of my favorite illustrators and learned so much. Now I try to draw or paint every day and I feel like it’s only going to get better!
Who are your biggest painting and art inspirations?
Mary Blair, Roger Duvoisin, and Ludwig Bemelmans. They are AMAZING!
Any design trends you’re particularly loving right now?
I have always loved mid-century everything. From furniture to books, it is my favorite!
What inspires you?
I’m also a hairstylist so I feel like I have to stay on trend, which helps. I believe you can pull inspiration from anything–from seeing what the celebrities are wearing to watching dumb reality shows. And, of course, Pinterest! How can you not be inspired?!
Are you a night owl or an early bird?
100% night owl!! My battery runs very low in the morning.
Describe the spot in which you create your artwork.
I have a room set aside for painting, but I want to be where my husband and little boy are, so I usually paint at the kitchen table. The room where I am supposed to paint has been dubbed “the crap room.”
If you could design anything what would it be?
I would love to illustrate for children’s books. That has always been a dream of mine!
What moms have been the biggest inspirations to you—real, fictional, TV characters, or otherwise?
Let’s start with real. My mom. My mom is the most amazing human on this planet. She is such a hardworking, loving, and hilarious person. She is everything I want to be. The love I have for that woman is unreal. Little secret… I am a TV junkie. My two favorite moms on TV are Lorelei Gilmore and Tami Taylor. Lorelei is witty and hilarious and Tami is just real.
What kind of child were you?
I asked my mom and she said I had quite the imagination! Which is true. One time I dressed up and went outside where my sister was playing with her friends and busted out singing “If I was a Rich Man” from Fiddler on the Roof. She hated it and ran in to tell my mom I was embarrassing her.
What would you like to say to your own mom now that you are grown?
Mom, you were right. You do know what you’re talking about. But more importantly I love you and you’re my best friend.
How has becoming a mom yourself changed your outlook on life?
I never knew I could love a tiny human so much. There is nothing like being a mom. It is incredible.
What advice would you give someone who is about to become a mom for the first time?
I promise that being pregnant is worth it. When that little one is born your heart will explode with love. Enjoy every second. They really do grow up so fast.
Which is your favorite card in your collection and why?
My favorite is the floral wreath that has Happy Mother’s Day written on it. I love how simple it is.
What’s your perfect day look like?
Spending it with my husband and son! My favorite days are when we are just home. I feel like we are busy all the time so when we get to all hang out at home it’s the best. Also, throw in a nap for me and that would be icing on the cake!
