Getting festive with felt

Hallmark artist Elissa Duncan got her co-workers together for a felt workshop that yielded a whole lotta festivity. Elissa lets us into her creative process below.

Happy Christmas decorations are my favorite! I love decorations that are beautifully crafted, feel handmade and have a little bit of sparkle. I thought it would be a really fun creative break for some fellow artists to get crafty with felt and tools of their choice. We had an afternoon of fun assembling various Christmas crafts and ended up with a fun bunch of decorations!

We used a range of felt, embroidery floss, glue, ribbon, sequins, pom poms, scissors, batting, and anything else we could find to make our holiday felt creations. Crafts like this can be as simple or elaborate as you’d like! An easy way to work with felt at home is to cut simple shapes (Christmas trees, circles for ornaments) or letters out and use fabric glue to add fun embellishments. String them together to create a garland or hang them as individual Christmas ornaments. Keep on scrolling to see what we came up with during our felt workshop.

Some felt creations were intricate and elaborate, like Susan Crilley’s trees, Cece Merkle’s bird (both above), and Em Bronson’s wreath (below).

Some ornaments were simple and sweet, like Amber Goodvin’s Ho Ho Ho banner below.

And of course, more than a few were beautifully crafted, like Karla Taylor’s bear and Cathy McQuitty’s cardinal below.

Some artists got really creative with how they assembled their felt decorations. Examples? My Santa and trees, Mirna Stubbs’s tic tac toe board, Maja Anderson’s stocking, Jennifer Silvers’s wreath, and Barb Mizik’s pillow, all below.
