If you’re a big football fan—or friend of big sports fans—a DIY felt pennant banner is a great way to show your team spirit. This one’s easy to customize in team colors for your room or your next tailgate. (And get our tailgate party tips here!)
DIY FELT PENNANT BANNER SUPPLIES
9×12 felt sheets in your team colors (each square makes one banner—we used 6 black and 5 red)
White adhesive-backed craft felt (we used 3 sheets)
Yarn in one of your team colors (we used 12 yards of black yarn)
Free printable template
Scissors
Craft knife
Pencils (#2 and white)
Metal ruler
Measure the spot where you want to hang your pennant and cut a piece of yarn that length—plus a little for tying or pinning it up. Or just stretch the yarn across the spot, add some extra, and cut.
Divide your length by nine to figure out many banners to make—and divide that by two to determine how many of each color.
To make each pennant, fold a felt sheet in half lengthwise.
Lay the metal ruler diagonally from the top open corner to the bottom folded corner, and cut a triangle using the craft knife. (Or draw a line and use the scissors to cut.)
Print the free printable designs onto plain white paper.
Use a craft knife to cut out the yard-line numbers, hash-marks, and football stitching.
You get the best results if you cut adhesive-backed felt on the paper side. So:
- Once you’ve cut the numbers out of paper, flip them over and trace them backwards onto the paper backing.
- Then use a craft knife to cut them out.
Cut a quarter-inch wide, 12″ long strip from the white felt and run it down the center of each yard-line pennant.
Add the numbers, then the hash-marks.
For the football pennants, cut 1 1/2″ strips from the white felt. Run one 1″ down from the top, and the other about 2 1/2″ from the bottom.
Use the ruler and craft knife to cut off the overhang.
Cut a small slit on each side of the top of each flag—about 3/4″ down and 3/4″ in.
Lay the felt pennants in order, and thread the yarn through the slits.
Now your banner is ready to hang anywhere you like:
- Across the open trunk of your car
- Over the buffet table
- In your football star’s (or super fan’s) room
- On your front porch
Prepare to be high-fived.
