Illustrator Kelli Murray shows us her #SignatureStyle

Kelli Murray is creative, passionate and inspiring! She’s a designer and illustrator, and has her own children’s clothing line inspired by her two kids. On top of all that, we’re excited to be sharing Kelli’s artist collaboration for Hallmark Signature’s 2016 Christmas offering. The offering, which can be found in Hallmark Gold Crown Stores and online, is filled with four of the sweetest and coziest cards. Read on to learn more about what Kelli loves, where she finds her inspiration, and lots more!

What inspired your collection?
I was inspired by nostalgic memories from my childhood of Christmases spent at my grandparents’ cabin in the north woods of Wisconsin.  Being from California, a white Christmas always felt so magical.  We would often look out the cabin windows to see deer crossing the path outside.

How would you describe your collection?
I think it has a little bit of a vintage vibe to it.  It’s classic yet artistic. And it gives me all those warm fuzzy holiday feelings! 🙂

Do you have a favorite card from it? If so, which and why?
I think my favorite is probably the cabin scene because it reminds me so much of my grandparents’ place in Wisconsin.  Winter there is just so beautiful and there is nothing quite like a cozy cabin (and a room filled with family) when it’s cold outside… especially around the holidays.

What was your work process like to create the 4 cards in your collection?
I always sketch out a rough idea of the layout before getting started.  From there I create a finished sketch and start painting.  I like to use watercolor for most of my work.  Once the painting is done, I scan it in to my computer and touch it up digitally.  I usually end up adding more layers digitally for the final touches.

What are your favorite holiday colors and patterns?
I am kind of a neutral gal so I like to keep with a more muted color palette.  I love creams and browns and muted shades of green.  Florals and greenery are some of my favorite things to draw, so those elements always end up being my favorite patterns.

Who would you send each of your cards to?
Definitely my grandparents, since a lot of the inspiration came from them.  But also my sisters and mom and close friends.

What are some of your favorite holiday traditions?
Every year we have an annual sugar cookie bake with my 2 sisters and my mom and our families.  With all our kids, it ends up being 13 of us—which obviously results in a crowded kitchen! But it really is one of my favorite traditions… decorating together with all the kids.  We also all get together on Christmas Eve to do our gift exchanges and eat a big feast together.

What are you most looking forward to doing this holiday?
I always look forward to the family gatherings this time of year, and also our family trip to the mountains for hiking and apple pie.  My son just turned 2 in September, so it will be his first real Christmas where he understands what is going on.  I’m excited to experience it through his eyes.

Tell us a little about your blog/site and brand?
I worked for 6 years as a fashion merchandiser and designer before deciding to go freelance to pursue my art more full-time.  I’ve always been inspired by fashion, but art is something that I feel most called to.  My blog is a place where I share about my passions… whether it be art, fashion, or my kids.  About 2 years ago I launched my own children’s clothing line named after my own kids – Rylee & Cru.  It’s grown faster than I could have ever imagined, and today that takes up the majority of my workload.  But I’m still fortunate enough to take on freelance illustration and design jobs as my schedule allows.  It’s truly a blessing to do what I love for a living.

Where can our TMS followers find out more about you?
On my website – kellimurray.com or you can check out my clothing line at ryleeandcru.com. And of course on instagram @kelli_murray or @ryleeandcru.
